About us

At SAAR, our mission is to make a difference to the lives of patients with Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases.  We aim to do this through many fronts: Support, Awareness, Action and Rehabilitation.

Turning personal adversity to serving society – Founding of SAAR:
SAAR (www.saar-foundation.org) was founded in January, 2019 by Dr. Shanthipriya, an ophthalmologist, who was diagnosed at a young age of 36, a case of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD).  After several years of self-denial, she decided to overcome her personal adversity by both sharing her story with the world and deciding to start a foundation, which would support and care for patients with PD – thus SAAR Foundation was born.

SAAR’s mission – make a difference to the lives of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients:

There are many challenges faced by patients of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in India: late diagnosis, social stigma, lack of education / awareness among patients / caregivers, lack of holistic approaches to managing PD and ND, lack of medical access among poor patients, and lack of support groups.  SAAR’s mission is to address these challenges through the following:

  • Support: Create a support ecosystem for people with neurological diseases
  • Awareness: Conduct awareness programs for patients and caregivers
  • Action: Influence actions and rally support to achieve SAAR’s objectives
  • Rehabilitation: Build a state-of-the-art neurological rehabilitation center

Work done to date:

  • Support and Awareness: Organized a massive Walkathon in April, 2019 to raise awareness for PD in South Chennai, India, which had over 1,000 participants. Organized a PD Awareness session in Bangalore, India as well as a second Walkathon covering North Chennai.
  • Organized workshops involving exercises, alternative therapies and lifestyles such as yoga, color and aroma therapy, tai chi and meditation.
  • Plans for the future:

    • Support and Awareness: Member recruitment: Actively drive new member recruitment across India; Medical support for patients in need
    • Rehabilitation: Establish a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center in Chennai that will include air, water and land-based therapies; Customized solutions for member-patients covering exercise, alternate therapies and diet; Collaborative research in how lifestyle changes and alternative therapies can complement conventional PD treatments
Action: Engage with national and international organizations that will help drive governmental policies and support mechanisms in caring for PD patients; Facilitate bringing clinical trials to India and in recruiting PD patients
